Debit card use in the United States – Update

November 13, 2018

We are providing our membership with an update in regards to Debit Card usage within the United States. We recently have been in contact with our service provider and were advised that the transition from Magnetic Stripe to Chip Debit Cards in the United States is still ongoing. It will likely take another few years before all Point of Sale (POS) terminals across the United States to have been augmented accordingly. As a result, members may still be unable to process their Debit Card purchases at various vendors in the United States. In view of this, we recommend the following options when making purchases in the United States:

  1. Make a cash withdrawal in the United States at an ATM machine that we partner with as displayed on the back of your debit card. Our partners are: Interac, Cirrus, AccuLink, Accel and The Exchange. Please note that your ATM and POS Limits are Canadian dollar limits and you will need to consider the daily exchange rate for your transactions.

  1. Use a USD Visa card so you can avoid extra currency exchange and transactions processing network fees. VPCU currently offers a USD Visa card. For more information, please click HERE.

  1. Carry some USD cash and have it on hand just in case before you leave Canada. VPCU currently offers foreign exchange currency delivery to your home. For more information, please click HERE.
